Who is 'The French Polisher'?

George Frank's book on life as a French Polisher was the inspirational force behind Ian Thomson's decision to take up the age-old craft of French Polishing.

From beginnings in Wellington, New Zealand, while studying Industrial Design, Ian crafted his first creation, a Box from a small, yet beautiful timber piece.

After stints as a timber furniture designer and studying Interior Design, Ian moved to Sydney, Australia, to further his career in graphic art materials marketing and management.

It was at this point that he discovered the art of French Polishing and enrolled in French Polishing School for three years. Here, Ian's ability and flair were recognised with the 'Top Student Award'. Following work with a number of furniture restorers and an antique dealer, Ian's passion for the art quickly grew and flourished into his own business in furniture conservation and restoration.

Not content with the basics, Ian studied Applied and Practical Chemistry for three years to learn more about timber finishes and chemicals used in the industry. More importantly, he discovered the secret behind turning Australian Red Cedar into old golden timber with a magic patina.

In addition to his box making pursuits, Ian is currently studying Sacred Geometry and Aesthetics, teaches Aikido and is a keen fly fisherman.
